If your partner has just learned she’s unexpectedly pregnant, you’re likely feeling many emotions. From fear to anxiety to even confusion, all feelings are valid.

You have a unique (and challenging) opportunity to support your partner during this time. And you don’t need to navigate the situation alone. Care Net Pregnancy Center of Wayne County is here for you, too.

How Can I Be Supportive?

It can be difficult to know what to say or do during a stressful time, and pregnancy is no exception. Here are some helpful tips for this time:

  1. Listen to your partner. As the one who’s pregnant, she is likely feeling a great deal of stress and uncertainty right now. Recognize the role you each played in this pregnancy rather than assigning blame or being quick to react. Walk alongside her by listening to her fears and hopes for this situation.
  2. Evaluate your own feelings. As the father, you can still play a crucial role in the decision-making process. And you may be worried about extra responsibilities. Be sure to process your own emotions. Speak to a trusted loved one or a Client Advocate at our center. You don’t have to wrestle with these complex emotions alone.
  3. Learn your partner’s needs. When she’s ready, your partner can share what would most benefit her. Whether that’s taking on extra household responsibilities or helping her make a pregnancy decision, determine her needs and how you can best support her.

Your partner may want your opinion on pregnancy options, and if she’s comfortable, you can attend an options consultation together. Or she may lean heavily toward one option over another.

Share your opinions about the pregnancy in a thoughtful and considerate way. Emotions may be heightened, but it’s best to listen to your partner’s concerns and provide input in a respectful manner.

Though your partner is the one who’s pregnant, she may be open to hearing your thoughts. She may want to learn more about her options if you show a willingness to be involved and learn alongside her.
