Considering Parenting?
Parenting can create many mixed emotions and challenges. But with great risk comes great reward; you may be more capable than you think.
Before making a pregnancy decision, speak to Care Net Pregnancy Center of Wayne County to learn about parenting and the available resources if you select this option.
Do I Have What It Takes To Be A Parent?
Determining whether you can parent may feel complicated. Perhaps you’re listening to others’ opinions and unsure how you feel, or you have preconceived ideas about parenting.
Any fears or concerns you have are valid. And asking yourself some questions can help you decide:
- Am I mentally and physically able to parent (can I care for a child and myself at this time)?
- What support system do I have in place? If I don’t have one, do I know where I can find resources?
- Will the baby’s father be involved (financially, physically, etc.)? Do I know what legal support I am entitled to?
- Do I live in an environment that’s safe for a child to grow up in?
- Is there anything I’d like to know more about parenting?
While these questions may not lead to a final decision, they provide a foundation for you to explore any concerns and identify resources you may need. If you feel parenting is the right option, know you won’t embark on this journey alone.
Parenting In School
Parenting as a high school or college student creates new challenges that likely make your situation feel even more complex. If you’re leaning toward parenting, you may be asking yourself the following:
- How can I finish my education?
- Will I still be able to have a career while caring for my child?
- I’m nervous about how my friends, family, and classmates will react. How am I going to adjust to this new chapter?
- Will I be discriminated against?
We understand these concerns, and you aren’t the first to have questions at this new stage of your life. But according to Title IX, you can’t be discriminated against while pregnant or parenting. You are entitled to reasonable accommodations, excused absences, and more.
Care Net Pregnancy Center of Wayne County will help you understand your rights as a pregnant or parenting student. You’ve got this, and we’re in your corner.
