Get the Information You Need
Your pregnancy test is positive. Your mind is likely full of questions.
How far along am I? What do I do next? Who can I turn to?
Care Net Pregnancy Center of Wayne County is committed to your care and well-being. We want you to make an informed decision that considers your pregnancy status. An ultrasound is a key part of this process.
Why Do I Need An Ultrasound?
An ultrasound is an essential way to confirm your pregnancy. If you skip this step, you won’t receive valuable information that safeguards your health and clarifies your pregnancy options.
Ultrasounds detect and monitor various health conditions. In this case, they can assess the pregnancy’s overall health and identify certain issues that require medical attention.
Transvaginal ultrasounds are invasive, as the transducer (a small, wand-like device emitting sound waves that create an image) is gently inserted into the vagina. This type of ultrasound is typically used during the earliest stages of pregnancy, as it provides the clearest image.
Abdominal ultrasounds are noninvasive. The sonographer will apply gel to your abdomen and guide a transducer over your abdomen.
This scan provides the following information:
- Viability: Learn whether your pregnancy is progressing normally and has a detectable heartbeat. Up to 26% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, which may need monitoring or treatment.
- Gestational age: Knowing how far along you are is crucial as it informs you of your options. For example, medical abortion is FDA-approved through ten weeks gestation, so you can’t choose this procedure if you’re further along.
- Location: Your pregnancy’s location is a key detail—and it’s more important than you may think. Some women experience an ectopic pregnancy, which occurs when a fertilized egg implants in a location other than the uterus. This pregnancy isn’t viable, so it cannot survive. You’ll need immediate medical treatment if you have this condition.
